WINDY GYLE Sun.22nd June 2008

Heading over the Carter Bar last Sunday the heavens opened and the prospects of a dry Windy Gyle race looked remote. We even wondered if the bad weather route might be invoked. However, things improved and the normal 9 mile route was on, although the wind was starting to get up. The first section of the horse-shoe route had a pleasant tail wind and Keith Murray soon settled into his stride at the sharp end. Jim Knox started near the back but was soon threading his way through the field, and Lindsey Knox started near Jim then watched his orange shorts disappear over the horizon. The runners were amused to find the Mountain Rescue landrover in a ditch near the top of Windy Gyle, a bit too slippy after all the rain. Along the ridge the sideways wind was getting fairly strong and some of the slighter-built runners were having a struggle. Then the heavy rain started, battering into our faces on the last leg towards the finish. Keith ploughed on, heading for an excellent 3rd place/1st MV40 in 68 minutes. Jim had trouble seeing through his glasses in the rain and run out of steam too on his longest run for about 2 years, finishing in 17th place/1st MV60 in 82 minutes. Lindsey decided to stop and put on a waterproof but missed out on a PB by 40 seconds in the process, drat, in a time of 92 minutes for 25th place/2nd LV40/3rd Lady. The prizegiving was the usual beer and chocolates, and we had the added bonus of an adder at the finish line which wasn’t keen to move.

Yetholm Hill Race 12.8km 762m - Sun 1st June

Having been basking in the sunshine at Earlston Games the previous day Harriers Kenny Short and Keith Murray ventured into the Cheviots in miserable conditions on Sunday for the Yetholm Hill Race. In keeping with Earlston however host club Norham had decided to run the race the "wrong" way round, running the course in an anticlockwise direction for the first time and this coupled with the low cloud caused enough confusion to send about half of the 66 runner field on an unplanned diversion. The route change meant that the cattle trodden field normally undertaken by weary legs was at the start of the race before a steep climb up onto Staerough Hill and a rollercoaster run over Sunnyside Hill, Wildgoose Hill and Latchley Hill. At this point several runners strayed off course following the wall downhill before climbing back up to Curr via the bad weather Pennine Way route, although this may well have been a cunning plan to avoid the toughest part of the course as the direct climb up the Curr proved to be. The tried and tested navigation method of following the runner in front, especially when he's from the home club kept both Harriers on course and after turning at the off the top of the Curr we were to be met by cold wind and the "lost souls" heading in the opposite direction. From here the race followed the higher Pennine Way route and proved to be an excellent run over Black Hag, Steer Rig and White Law before an exhilarating descent of about 2 miles at full throttle. Both Harriers enjoyed good runs with Murray finishing 4th in 1:16:23 just edging out 5th placed Short in 1:16:38 although if Kenny knew there were 2 bottles of beer at stake for 3rd MV40 his 800m speed may well have prevailed. Will Horsley of NFR won impressively having time to go the long way round and still finish over 2 minutes clear in 1:13:58.

Isle of Harris Marathon 26th May '08

During the long trip up it was a pleasure to meet fellow harrier Alan Inglis briefly in Ullapool who'd just finished his saturday race and was travelling home with family. After a days rest in Stornoway got the bus down to Tarbet early monday. Jim Bruce gave great commentry on the local landscape, history and of course local races, pointing out that the south of England was underwater while we were basking in sunshine. This raised a cheer from the runners! It all helped to settle pre-race nerves. After some waiting around at the start at Amhuinnsuidhe Castle, Graham Henry (Portobello) got proceedings off with a sprint up the first hill but then decided he would leave his 2:03 attempt for another day! After about 2 miles I found myself drifting off the front, not something I'm used to but I moderated my efforts as we'd already seen the first 9 miles and were reliably informed that the second half was even hillier, and boy was it just. A few miles of flat followed by a loop round Tarbet led to some of the toughest but most beautiful landscapes I've seen. A group of cyclists ahead served as a goal, and catching them on the uphills they would zip past on the way down, eventually getting off to cheer the race on "you've only got 10 miles to go", I could have cried. That 26 mile marker seemed to take forever and I was just waiting for someone with stronger legs to go roaring past. But it never happened, and I was delighted to scrape in with 2:59:16 on the clock to be the first M.Sen. with Giles Harris (GVS) taking second and two marathon challenge overall, with Claire Gordon (HBT) first F.Sen. A few beers were called for! Mind you at least I waited till the end, Big Ivor (saturday's winner) had a bottle of stout ready at the twelve mile station! Race organisation really was top notch, especially as it was effectively a one off. Tuesday got a lift back and was royally entertained by non-stop Radio Henry, a mixture of football chants, music and miscellaneous nonsense such as "Braun you're not fit to.........". I don't know how Richard (nobody messes with Ricardo) Dennis could drive for laughing, but he deserved a prize for the fastest journey home. Aside, you may know Debbie McDonald of HBT has recently donated a kidney to her long suffering sister Karen. The operation was a success so here's wishing them both a full recovery from the Harriers.

Glas Tulaichean Sat. 31st May

The Glas Tulaichean race has one great advantage over most other hill races - you only race UP. This makes it ideal for people with dodgy knees who find running down the hardest part. You can also tick it off your Munro list. Jim and Lindsey did this race last Saturday, the weather was a bit on the warm side but it was worth it for the glorious views from the top. The race starts at Dalmunzie Hotel at Spittal of Glenshee, then along about 2 miles of gently undulating landrover track to the bottom of the mountain. This section has the added interest of at least 3 river crossings. The climb starts and you have 2.5 miles of uphill to the top where the organiser has arranged for your warm clothing to be transported. A gentle jog and walk back, piles of free food, some banter, a prizegiving (Jim was 1st M60 in 51 mins, Lindsey 2nd W40 in 63 mins) and a sit in the sunshine, a great day out.

Stuc a Chroin 5000 - Strathyre. Sat. 3 May 2008

. With the forecast bad weather failing to materialise - conditions for the 20th Anniversary Stuc a Chroin hill race were pretty much perfect. 138 runners set off from Strathyre, just north of Callander, for the 22 km run with Keith Murray (KG) and Kenny Short representing Teviotdale. This was the first time either of us had participated in the race - but the tough course did not come as a shock due to some previous beta from Johnny Marsh! The deceptively easy start through a gently rising forest track soon gave way to a steep uphill climb over rough ground, dropping sharply into Glen Ample before the start of the hill proper over Bienn Each and on to the 975 metre summit of Stuc a Chroin. Resisting the temptation to start a summit snowball fight, it was back down the hill before hitting the crux of the race - the climb back out of Glen Ample on shredded legs! After this, a long run out along the now gently down sloping forest track and the finish at Strathyre!

Solid performances from the two Teviotdale Runners earned 22nd place and 31st place for Kenny & KG respectively - in times of 2 hrs 46 and 2 hrs 53. KG reckons he could have caught me on the way in but was saving his legs for the evening Ceilidh! Thanks to the organisers and numerous marshals on the route - probably the best supported race I've taken part in!

Kenny Short.

Cheviot Summit Fell Race 6.2m 2026' - Sun 27th April 2008

The Harthope valley near Wooler was the venue for the Cheviot Summit fell race last Sunday which was run in fine weather although boggy underfoot. A straight out and back race starting with a short tarmac stretch before turning off the road and straight into the climb up onto Scald Hill where conditions started to get a bit softer and by the time we crossed a flatter section towards the Cheviot the peat bog was hard to avoid. A steep climb took us up into the cloud which was covering the summit where the paved path along to the cairn kept us clear of what was a very unwelcoming quagmire, apparently chest high. An about turn at the cairn and a good long descent clearing most of the bog with the benefit of downhill momentum and some well timed leaps. Picking up a couple of places on the descent saw me home 8th of the 56 runners just missing the hour in 1:00:05, with the winning time 53:13 by Will Horsley of NFR.

Anniversary Waltz 11.5m 3600' - Sat 19th April 2008

422 runners lined up for the Anniversary Waltz fell race in the Newlands valley near Keswick last Saturday, with a further 229 competing across the various age groups in the Junior races plus numerous spectators around the course it all made for a great atmosphere at what appears to be one of the most popular events in the fell racing diary. Conditions were dry and clear but a strong wind made for tough conditions on the hilltops, indeed the U16/U18 race had to be rerouted as the summit marshals were struggling to stand up. The race started and finished behind Stair village hall with a good run out to the foot of Robinson before a long hard climb with a fair amount of scrambling involved. Once over the top of Robinson there followed a cracking run taking in the peaks of Hinds Garth, Dale Head, High Spy and over Maiden Moor before a dash to the finish off the top of Cat Bells. This final descent gave a real sting in the tail with some of the fiercest winds of the day whistling round Cat Bells despite the relatively low altitude. Running for Teviotdale Keith Murray came 64th of the 413 finishers in 1:56:47, with the winning time being 1:33:10. Meanwhile the junior races had been taking place with Calum Murray putting in a fine effort to finish 5th of 32 in the under 8's race. An excellent event, really well organised, with a great atmosphere and free beer at the end, definitely recommended.

Middlefell Fell Race 6.6m 1700’ – Sat 5th April 2008

Despite the wintry forecast, I headed down to Wasdale on Saturday past to find excellent conditions for the Middlefell Fell Race with fine sunshine only interrupted on a couple of occasions by passing showers. The race started and finished at the Screes Inn, in the tiny village of Nether Wasdale with the first 2 miles a good run out over tracks and farmland, followed by a short downhill road section before turning off for the climb up Middlefell. This proved to be a steep and steady climb, rising 510m in 1.8km, on which some managed to keep running, but for most of us lesser mortals walking seemed a much better idea. A short hail storm early in the climb soon cleared away, and as the summit approached, it was tempting to stop and take in the magnificent views to the high peaks above Wastwater on one side, and out to the Isle of Man on the other. An about turn was made at the summit cairn, to return by the same route, and after a fine descent the return to the road left most of the field jelly-legged ,and what had been a pleasant run out became a tortuous run back to the finish. Despite quickly losing the place gained on the descent, I managed to hang on for 12th place finishing in 1:00:18 which also earned 3rd in MV40. Winning time was 52:35 by Ricky Lightfoot from Ellenborough.

Langholm 5 Hills 2008

This is an interesting wee race of about 8 miles and 3000 ft of ascent taking in 5 of the hills surrounding Langholm. The route isn’t timed, marshalled or marked and runners need to start at whatever time they reckon will get them to the finish at 12.30. The first hill is Whita Hill which is a good warm-up ! The faster ones catch the slower ones up on the last hill and it’s a mad dash through the streets of Langholm to the finishing pole where the organiser (who also runs the race) takes your time and entry fee. A larger than usual contingent from Teviotdale took part this year with Bill Knox finishing best in 1:47 hrs followed by Lindsey Knox in 1:53. Jim Knox and Rob Mitchell both walked round, finishing in 2:05 and 2:27 respectively. Soup, rolls and banter were enjoyed at the organisers house after the race.

Causey Pike 4.5m 1780’ – Sat 22nd March

With sunshine, cold wind and snow showers on the menu I headed down to the Lake District for the Causey Pike Fell Race on Easter weekend. The race started from the tiny hamlet of Stair in the Newlands valley and after a short road section the field of 114 snaked onto the fellside for the steep climb up to Rowling End. Any hope of a respite at the top were dashed with the cold North wind grabbing at our lungs as we ran on only to be met by the arrival of a snow shower as we started the final scramble up the rocky slopes of Causey Pike. Turning of the ridge onto a steep grassy descent the wind was now driving the snow/hail directly into our faces and once onto a rough stony track a touch of caution seemed prudent as we continued downwards. Despite losing touch with those in front nobody was pressing from behind and I could relax on the final run back to Stair finishing 40th in a time of 42:54, with the only other Scottish representative Jethro Lennox from Shettleston well clear in a winning time of 34:01. Although a short race the lingering aches testify to the severity of the climbs and while conditions were far from perfect, when we woke up to a blanket of snow on the Sunday confirmed that we had actually had the best of the Easter weather to race in.

CUP RACES Sat.8th Mar.2008

Teviotdale Harriers held their cup races on Saturday up on Hawick Moor, run in atrocious conditions it was the u13 boys and girls who got the day underway, with one and a half laps of the race course to be covered. At the finish it was Jason Mcintosh from Kelso who won the trophy with Sam Tomas second andHarry Marshall in third
. In the girls race Mhari Inglis was first across the line with sister Eilidh in second place and Holly Gray in third.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greys Pike 5m 800`- Sunday 2nd March Four local runners made the short journey to Kielder Castle on Sunday for the Greys Pike fell race. As the field of 30 runners lined up at the start the pre-race sunshine had given way to cloud and a chill was in the air which proved to be a portent of things to come. Things soon warmed up with a fast downhill start on the road and some tarmac paths took us over the old viaduct and a glimpse of the reservoir before the long steady climb to Greys Pike began. A short woodland stretch was negotiated before the route opened up into the firebreaks which would take us to the summit and provide some tough going as the boggy conditions threatened to devour any trainers not securely fastened. A strong headwind on the descent was accompanied by heavy rain which cooled us down as we retraced our steps through the bog before turning off onto a fast forest path and the finish back at the castle. Despite the low field some decent runners turned up (the top 8 anyway) with the field well strung out and the winner Ian Nixon from Pudsey & Bramley winning in 38:36. Representing Teviotdale were Keith Murray 9th (45:07) and Billy Fraser 11th (46:38), while ex-Harriers Stuart Fraser and Rory Anderson showed up well in 6th (42:37) and 7th (43:11). A good race just down the road and for anyone feeling brave or foolhardy enough, its big brother The Kielder Borderer (17m 3000`) is due to take place from the same venue later in the year, date not yet decided.

High Cup Nick - Sat 23rd Feb

Last Saturday saw the second running of the High Cup Nick Fell Race from the village of Dufton in Cumbria, and judging by pre and post race comments with a total of 143 runners it is already establishing itself as a popular event. Most of the locals seemed to be involved either marshalling or helping in the village hall and with junior races for all ages it all added to the friendly atmosphere. Conditions were bright as the race got underway but although the rain had been left behind at the border, high wind and low cloud would make for testing conditions later on. From the start on the village green a mixture of road, track, boggy fields, stream crossing and rock strewn trod was negotiated before arriving at the climb up to Hugh Cup Nick. This proved to be a gradually steepening climb over wet slippy rocks and boulders with the tail wind being funnelled up behind us until emerging into the cloud alongside a small waterfall which was being blown back up from whence it came. The relief at reaching the top was quickly dampened when turning back into the wind which along with the cloud made things pretty miserable as the descent got underway. The lack of a view was probably a blessing as a rocky section of the Pennine Way required total concentration to avoid mishap but as underfoot conditions and visibility improved speed was gradually increased until it became a full throttle descent to the finish and the sanctuary of the village hall where a grand cup of soup and fine spread of cakes helped aid the recovery process. The race was won by Jim Davies of Borrowdale in 1:01:55 while Keith Murray made the trip down for Teviotdale with family in tow and returned happy to finish 31st in 1:16:57 and with both children running admirably to collect their cream eggs a grand day out was had by all. Definitely worth a visit hopefully on a clear day where I am assured a spectacular view awaits making the trip even more worthwhile.
