The Reunion run 22/3/8
At 1330 on the 22 March I began to get a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. Was it last nights Indian? No, but somewhere at the back of my memory I recognised the symptoms it was pre race nerves!!! At 1430 a group of middle aged men began to gather at the haugh in faded tracksuits that didn't quite hide their beer bellies. In all almost 30 runners and another 10 timekeepers, next of kin and those people that stop at car crashes had turned up for our run. After handshakes and photos we set off with Stewart Barker and Neil Dalgetty setting a blistering pace, by the park gates it had settled down to a crawl. We mustered again at the top of the park before continuing to Martins Brig, then the Fisherman's Walk where a minutes silence was held for 'absent friends' Finally, we headed down the main road with the pace increasing until 'Herb' Elliot eased to the front as we returned to the Haugh - Sorry Herb no prizes today. Later we met at the Balmoral for a meal and a drink. Again, well over 30 Harriers turned up to reminisce about great races of the past. Unfortunately Pye Reid had brought the handicap books for the past 40 years with him, so all those alleged fast times were checked and discounted. One thing we all agreed was that it was a great night and it will happen again in 2009. It was great to see so many 'old Harriers' together and I trust you enjoyed your day as much as I did Derek Clyne
